Msc. Mathematics (pure mathematics)
The MSc Math shall provide training for mathematicians who are interested in the fundamental ideas of Mathematics without necessarily applying them but being well disposed to their application. It will also provide training for those who intend to apply Mathematics in industry, economic development and scientific research. This training is to be done without losing sight of the importance for this type of mathematician possessing a good understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts that are widely used in applications.
This programme is mainly Pure Mathematics and is Plan A (Coursework and Dissertation). The Department has a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics to cater for Applied Mathematicians.
Objective of the Programme
The general objective of the programme is to train professional mathematicians capable of promoting the teaching, research, application and outreach of Mathematics in Uganda and beyond.
The specific objectives of the programme are to:
(a) provide skills for high quality research and teaching in the field of Mathematics,
(b) produce a critical mass of persons with a solid mathematical base that they can use to popularize and meet the challenges of mathematical applications to the industry and society,
(c) prepare graduates for a PhD in mathematics.
Resources
(a) Funding and Staffing
This private programme will be conducted by the existing members of staff in the Department. See Staff list in the Appendix I. The current staff is supplemented by staff from our collaborators. The Department of Mathematics is a member of the Eastern Africa Mathematics Universities Programme (EAUMP). The other universities in this network are University of Dar es Salaam, University of Nairobi, University of Rwanda and University of Zambia. All activities of the network are supported by the International Science Programme, Sweden.
(b) Available Resources
The Department of Mathematics is hosting a faculty computer lab of 50 computers. They are housed in room 204 which was provided by the department. Students who enroll on this programme will be provided with office space.
(c) Sustainability
The funds raised from the private students will be sufficient to run the programme at all times. The programme shall admit 20 students (18 East Africans and 2 others). The fees from the programme will cater for departmental running costs and paying of local staff involved in the teaching and supervision of students.
Tuition fees per year will be charged as follows:
East Africans Ug.Shs. 5, 200,000 per year
Others Ug.Shs. 6, 500,000 per year
(d) Tools, Equipment and Materials
The following tools, equipment and materials will be used in the teaching: LCD projector, computers, chalkboards, white boards, markers and chalk.
General Regulations
The programme shall be governed by the general regulations and statutes of Makerere University. The general regulations of the College of Natural Sciences shall also apply.
Admission Requirements
Admission will be open to applicants from all countries.
The main requirement is that the person to be admitted should possess any of the following from a recognized university.
- Mathematics major in Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Science with Education and related degree program of at least a good second class division or its equivalent.
- A Mathematics minor in any other degree program with a good second class upper of a CGPA 4.0 and above or its equivalent.
